A LIFE BEYOND THE WARD

More of Nigel’s story

Nigel Tucker is 76 and comes from Watford. After army service he worked in construction. He values teamwork, practical solutions and a little dry humour. In this fictional story he lives with Alzheimer’s disease and is in hospital for a short assessment after a fall and exhaustion. Sometimes he loses his thread or asks for a reminder; at other times an ordinary day from years ago comes back clearly. He does not have to prove anything or tell the whole story at once. His friend Colin brings postcards and simple crosswords.

CHAPTER 1 · FREE STORY

The pencil behind his ear

A small notebook and a pencil sit on the tray beside Nigel’s chair. Nigel remembers a day on a building site in Watford when everyone was looking for something to write down a measurement. One colleague checked his coat pockets; another looked in the toolbox. Nigel had the pencil behind his ear, but only noticed when he adjusted his glasses. He no longer remembers which room they were renovating. He remembers the laughter, though, and that the measurement was finally written down. Now he puts the pencil on his open notebook. It is easier to find there.

CHAPTER 2 · FREE STORY

A shared break

Nigel looks at the postcard Colin brought. The conversation turns to breaks at work. First in the army and later on building sites, he liked the moment when everyone put their task aside for a while. Someone handed out mugs; someone moved a chair. The details of different days sometimes get mixed together, and he does not force them into an order. One thing remains simple: it was good to sit together. Nigel straightens the notebook on the table and smiles at the thought that the most important tool during a break could be the kettle.

CHAPTER 3 · FREE STORY

Room for next time

Nigel opens his notebook at a short entry: “Colin. Postcard. Pencil.” For a moment he wonders what else he wanted to add. There is no need to hurry. On the next page he draws a rectangular window, like the ones he worked around. He leaves a space beside it. Perhaps another detail will return later, or perhaps the drawing will stay on its own. Nigel rests the pencil on the notebook. Conversation is not a memory test. It is all right simply to sit and return to a sentence when the mood comes.
