The postcard shows a garden Harjit has never visited. Her former pupil describes a bench, a stubborn gate and a tree with a label nobody can read. There is no celebrated monument in the picture. Harjit likes that. As a child moving between family homes in the Midlands and Punjab, she noticed small particulars first: the sound of a latch, the shady place at noon. In the hospital room, she turns the card over and reads the description again. She can almost hear that troublesome gate.
