The community kitchen had many generous cooks and never quite enough serving spoons. Amina once sewed an enormous pocket onto her apron to keep one close. It also collected a pencil, a shopping list and somebody’s cinema ticket. The ticket led to a long argument about a film neither cook had finished watching. Amina remembers that argument more clearly than the menu. From her hospital chair she examines a photograph of the apron. The pocket was crooked. It worked beautifully.
